Cosopt eye drops are effectively used to reduce the amount of fluid in the eye, which further decreases the pressure inside the eye. By decreasing the high pressure inside the eye, it mainly prevents blindness. Cosopt eye drops are also used in the treatment of other eye diseases.

Mechanism of action of Cosopt eye drops:

Cosopt contains two drugs named as Dorzolamide and Timolol, which belongs to a class of drugs known as Carbonic anhydrase inhibitors and Beta-blockers respectively. Dorzolamide blocks the action of an enzyme in the body called carbonic anhydrase. Carbonic anhydrase is usually responsible for the production of bicarbonate salt in the body. Bicarbonate is required for the production of the aqueous humour. By decreasing the production of bicarbonate, Dorzolamide also decreases the production of aqueous humour inside the eyes. Whereas, Timolol blocks the beta-receptors in the eye and reduces the amount of aqueous humour that is produced in the eye.

The dosage regimen of Cosopt  eye drops:

Cosopt eye drops are commonly available in multi-dose bottles and each bottle contains 5 ml of the Cosopt solution.  One drop of Cosopt eye drops should be instilled in the affected eye, two times daily. If more than one ophthalmic solution is being used, the drug should be administered at least five minutes apart. You should wash your hands before using Cosopt eye drops. Tilt your head back. Use your index finger to pull the lower eyelid away from the eye to form a pouch. Drop the Cosopt into the pouch and gently close your eyes. You should use your finger to apply pressure to the inside corner of the eye for 1 to 2 minutes. Do not blink.

Contraindications of Cosopt eye drops:

If you are allergic to Timolol, Dorzolamide or any of the ingredients present in it, then do not use Cosopt eye drops.

Precautions while using Cosopt eye drops:

  • If you are using any other Beta-blockers like Betaxolol or an oral Carbonic anhydrase inhibitor like Acetazolamide do not use Cosopt eye drops.
  •  If you are suffering from any heart disease, kidney disease, liver disease, diabetes, severe obstructive pulmonary disease or a history of asthma, then talk to your doctor before using Cosopt eye drops.
