Birth control pills also known as contraceptive pills is a type of female hormonal birth control method with is very efficient in preventing unwanted pregnancy. The birth control pills are the small tablets that are swallow every day to prevent the chances of becoming pregnant. Most of the birth control pills contain two types of female hormones such as estrogen and progestin which are similar to natural estrogen and progesterone produced by the ovaries of female. These types of pills are known as combined birth control pills. Another type of pill available in the market is progestin-only pill which contains one hormone known as progesterone. This type of pill is meant for females who are allergic to generic estrogen.
These pills prevent pregnancy repressing pituitary gland. This leads to the blockage in the development and liberation of an egg in the ovary (ovulation). The progestin functions by altering the uterine lining which makes it difficult for the sperm to reach the egg.
Combination birth control pills comprise of 28 tablets in which 21 pills are hormonal and 7 are non-hormonal pills. While starting this pack , a female should administer one hormonal pill daily for a time duration of 21 days. After completion of 21 days, she should consume non- hormonal pills for a week. Pills which contains only one hormone comprises of 21 pills which are consumed daily for a time span of 21 days.
