Acular eye drops are first-line therapy for the management of itchy eyes caused by seasonal allergies. It also reduces pain, inflammation, burning, and stinging sensation in the eyes following a certain type of remedial eye surgery (corneal refractive surgery). Acular eye drops enclose a generic drug called Ketorolac tromethamine.

Action mechanism of Acular eye drops:

Ketorolac tromethamine belongs to the class of medicines called nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). It inhibits the activity of Cyclooxygenase enzymes and inhibits the formation of prostaglandin or a substance that causes itching and inflammation.

Dosing regimen of Acular eye drops:

Acular eye drops is an ophthalmic preparation. A person should instill one drop of Acular eye drops four times a day to the affected eye for the relief of ocular itching due to seasonal allergic conjunctivitis. Dose for the management of postoperative inflammation in patients who have undergone cataract extraction: A person has to instill one drop of Acular eye drops to the affected eye four times daily beginning 24 hours after cataract surgery and continuing through the first 2 weeks of the postoperative period.

Contraindications of Acular eye drops:

  • If a person has hypersensitive reactions with Acular eye drops or other NSAIDs, then he or she should not use this medicine.
  • If a woman is pregnant or a breasting mother, then she should not use Acular eye drops.

Precautionary steps:

  • The vision may be blurred after using Acular eye drops, so do not drive a vehicle or operate any machinery after using this medicine.
  • Never try to use more than the recommended dose or use for longer than recommended period.
  • If you are wearing contact lenses, then remove them before using Acular eye drops.
  • If you have any of these medical conditions such as asthma, bleeding problems, diabetes, nasal polyps, or rheumatoid arthritis, then do not use without consulting your doctor.

Side effects of Acular eye drops:

A person may face some side effects while using Acular eye drops such as redness in the eyes, headache, and temporarily stinging or burning sensation in the eyes.

Drug interactions of Acular eye drops:

  • A person should not use Acular eye drops while using anticoagulants, aspirin, heparin, or NSAIDs, as this may enhance the risk of bleeding.
  • Do not use Acular eye drops if you are taking Dexamethasone, as it may slow or delay the healing of the eye.
